Giorgi Gakharia: It is unfortunate and tragic when a decision-maker for the country is sanctioned by the USA. This does not mean that we have achieved victory; it means that the fight and work must continue

It is unfortunate and tragic when a decision-maker for the country is sanctioned by the USA. This does not mean that we have achieved victory; it means that the fight and work must continue, - said Giorgi Gakharia, leader of "Gakharia for Georgia," in the "Political Space" program on PalitraNews.

According to Gakharia, as a result of the USA’s sanctioning of the honorary chairman of the "Georgian Dream" party, the government might resort to more severe and brutal actions.

"This is heavy, but it was expected. Ultimately, it does not change anything about the political processes that are ongoing in the country. There is nothing to celebrate or rejoice about here. It is still unclear how this will affect the actions of the regime. We need to closely observe the processes now. It is unfortunate and tragic when a decision-maker for the country is sanctioned by the USA. Consequently, all this political narrative they were creating before and after the elections, claiming they were leaving with dignity to the European Union and from January 20 would ‘fix’ relations with everyone, has now been exposed. I want to emphasize that this does not mean anything yet. There will still be a lot of work ahead, and I suspect it will be even more difficult because I don’t think this decision was unexpected for Ivanishvili. I will even tell you more, he was somewhat prepared for this.

This is a bipartisan decision, and the likelihood of it being reversed is very low. The important thing is how this decision will change the operational model of "Georgian Dream." Of course, it will have an impact, but we need to understand that this impact could make the regime even more severe, or the regime could become more brutal and resort to harsher actions, or on the contrary, make some concessions," said Giorgi Gakharia.

The US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of "Georgian Dream." This was announced by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury.

According to the statement, "As a person linked to Russia, sanctions are being imposed on Bidzina Ivanishvili and the companies he controls. These sanctions impose several restrictions, including those on all transactions involving any company owned by Ivanishvili, whether he controls it directly or indirectly, individually or collectively, and whether he owns 50% or more."
