It is time to start thinking about how to help Georgians get their stolen votes back, Rasa Juknevičienė, a Lithuanian MEP and permanent rapporteur on Georgia, said at the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, where they were listening to EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
“What is happening in Georgia now is not just a local issue, taking place on the periphery of Europe, but is very important. The three most important issues are: non-recognition, sanctions and new elections. Non-recognition - the “Georgian nightmare” is trying to gain legitimacy, so it is important to avoid visits. Sanctions - it is understandable that it is difficult, but the US has already imposed sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili for undermining Georgia’s democratic and Euro-Atlantic future. New elections - it is time to start thinking about how to help Georgians get back their stolen votes. There is no other way,” said Rasa Juknevičienė.
In response to Rasa Juknevičienė, EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, noted that more needs to be done to help Georgia.
“How can we help Georgia? We need to do more. As I have said, Georgia will be higher on my list of priorities. I thank the MEPs for their engagement on Georgia. We will discuss all three issues you mentioned. This is all up to the Member States, but we are already discussing it,” the Commissioner noted.
