Congressman Joe Wilson and British MP James McCleary are calling on the UK Foreign Secretary to sanction Bidzina Ivanishvili.

Wilson has posted the joint letter to the UK Foreign Secretary on his X page.

The letter is signed by Congressman Joe Wilson (Republican Party), Chairman of the US Helsinki Commission, and British MP James McCleary (Liberal Democrats).

“Although we come from opposite sides of both Atlantic and political spectrum, the challenge posed by Georgian oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili demands a united, transatlantic and cross-party response.

Foreign Secretary, I call on you to act without delay and impose sanctions on Ivanishvili, the oligarchic oppressor who has enabled Putin’s interference in Georgia’s democracy and undermined its sovereignty. The United States imposed sanctions on Ivanishvili in December 2024; in the spirit of transatlantic cooperation and respect for democracy, the United Kingdom must now follow suit,” reads the statement.
