"The opposition is currently parasitizing on this popular resistance, but we are grateful that they are not trying to take control of the process because they would ruin everything. The smartest thing the opposition can do right now is to stay quiet," said constitutional law specialist Vakhushti Menabde on PalitraNews' program "360 Degrees."
According to Menabde, the public did not entrust the opposition with leadership in this resistance process because they represent only themselves and their ambitions.
He noted that opposition parties do not represent anyone since they lack a support base whose interests they would defend.
"The opposition is the weak link in the resistance. On one hand, there is the resistance and the regime, which are currently in conflict with each other. Ideally, the opposition should be at the forefront of political processes because a political party is the most effective tool for interest groups. Unfortunately, Georgian political parties are not structured this way. They do not represent anyone. Georgian political parties do not have a support base whose interests they defend. So, what do they do? They only represent themselves and their ambitions. That is why, in this crucial process we are currently in, the Georgian people did not entrust the opposition with leadership.
Between the elections and [November 28, when Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that Georgia was halting its EU integration process], there was a time frame in which the opposition had the opportunity to act. If they were capable of doing something, they could have done it then. They tried certain things, but we saw that they failed because the people did not follow them.
After that, we saw the resistance against 'Georgian Dream,' which led to a spontaneous public resistance in Georgian society. At that point, the opposition realized that their role in this process was either to participate as ordinary citizens or to be mere observers.
The opposition knows that if they try to take the lead in this process, they will ruin everything, end up in the lion's den, and drag us down with them. They are wise enough to avoid doing that. They are waiting for the resistance to succeed and for elections to be called. The opposition is currently parasitizing on this popular resistance, but we are grateful that they are not trying to take control of the process because they would ruin everything. The smartest thing the opposition can do right now is to stay quiet. However, a few times, they couldn't resist and lacked the self-control to do so," Menabde said.
He added that the decisions made by "Georgian Dream" were also influenced by their perception of their opponents, which, according to him, is why they "dared so much."
"'Georgian Dream' dared to do so much up until now precisely because of who they saw as their opponents. They perceived their opponents as the opposition spectrum that we call the opposition. For 'Georgian Dream,' it was clear that dealing with them was not an insurmountable challenge.
'Georgian Dream' stole the elections from us and, even with such a weak opposition, could not achieve an honest victory. As for the latest changes, the strict measures that 'Georgian Dream' is trying to implement show that they are unable to effectively handle the resistance that exists today," Menabde stated.
