The Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, has established a group of doctors to assess the health condition of the hunger-striking journalist, Mzia Amaglobeli. The information was released by the Ombudsman's Office.
According to the statement, the group of doctors will examine Mzia Amaglobeli's medical records. This group will prepare a report and recommendations, which will be presented to the Public Defender.
"On February 6, the Public Defender of Georgia established a group of doctors to assess the adequacy and timeliness of the medical services provided to Mzia Amaglobeli by the Penitentiary Service (including contracted clinics).
The group was formed from candidates proposed by Mzia Amaglobeli’s representatives, in consultation with them and considering her health issues. The group consists of the following members:
The doctors will visit Mzia Amaglobeli in the near future and review her medical documentation. The group will prepare a report and recommendations to be submitted to the Public Defender. Based on the report, the Public Defender and the Ombudsman’s Office will take further legal action. Additionally, in compliance with the protection of special category personal data, relevant information will be provided to the public.
Once again, we emphasize that the mandate of the Public Defender does not include direct involvement in the treatment of prisoners, and the specialists invited by the Public Defender will not have this authority either," the statement reads.
