"The 'Deep State' seems to have even deeper roots in Britain—Bidzina Ivanishvili has no assets at all, so what exactly are they sanctioning him for? Maybe they should explain," said Levan Machavariani, an MP from "Georgian Dream," in a statement to journalists.
According to him, the discussion about imposing sanctions by Britain is "a continuation of blackmail."
Machavariani noted that no matter what decisions Britain makes, they will not be able to change Ivanishvili's position.
"What are they sanctioning him for? Maybe they should explain! Physically, Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili has no assets at all, so what exactly are they sanctioning? This is just a continuation of blackmail, and apparently, they still don’t understand that Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili is not afraid of blackmail. Three years ago, access to several billion was restricted for him—this was de facto sanctions. Then, there were some official sanctions, but they will not make Bidzina Ivanishvili take a step that goes against our country’s national interests. It doesn’t matter what they discuss or decide; they will not be able to change his position in any way," Machavariani stated.
For reference, the UK Minister for Europe, North America, and Overseas Territories, Stephen Doughty, expressed "serious concern" about the actions of the Georgian authorities. Speaking in the House of Commons, the British minister addressed the "crackdown on peaceful protesters" and stated that this was completely unacceptable.
Additionally, when asked about the possibility of sanctions against Ivanishvili, the British minister responded: "We continue to closely monitor the situation in Georgia. We do not comment on potential future sanctions, as doing so would reduce their impact."
