If we observe the behavior of the post-Soviet Baltic states, we will see that Saakashvili, who acted irresponsibly towards Russia, was supported and incited in every way, while the Georgian Dream government, which is dedicated to peace and the protection of Georgia’s real interests, is attacked in every way, and finally they even went so far as to impose incomprehensible sanctions – there is a special place in hell for those who sacrifice a friend to save their own skin, - the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, writes on social networks.
Shalva Papuashvili notes that caring for democracy is not a reason for the post-Soviet Baltic states, but only an excuse to put pressure on the Georgian government.
“The chaotic treatment of Georgian officials by three former Soviet republics – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – arouses not only bewilderment but also curiosity: what causes their over-enthusiasm when it comes to Georgia?
The official position of the post-Soviet Baltic leadership is that sanctions are a response to Georgia’s “democratic regression.” Leaving aside the reality (a reality that is based on international ratings and numbers), if they really cared about Georgian democracy, then why did they so vehemently support Saakashvili’s authoritarian regime, which trampled not only political freedoms but also all kinds of human rights? Why do they protect him to this day and try to save him from legal punishment? It seems that caring about democracy is not a reason for the post-Soviet Baltics, but only an excuse to put pressure on the Georgian government.
Or maybe they don’t like the Georgian government’s position on NATO or the international security order? Perhaps they are dissatisfied with the role that Georgia has played and is playing in international efforts for peace and stability?
The chaotic behavior not only arouses bewilderment, but also curiosity: what is causing their excessive enthusiasm when it comes to Georgia?
Maybe they are reproaching us for helping Ukraine, while Georgia did not officially send volunteers to Ukraine, thereby avoiding involvement in a bloody war? That should not be the case, because so far no one has noticed even a single Baltic platoon officially sent to the Ukrainian front.
The real answer to this riddle was given to us by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at the Munich Security Conference, who she said that the issue is not with Ukraine, but with Russia.
It is clear that Russia perceives the Baltics as a real threat and is using all means to neutralize or at least reduce this threat. It seems, Georgia is also considered a tool against Russia.
If we observe the behavior of the post-Soviet Baltic states, we will see that Saakashvili, who acted irresponsibly towards Russia, was supported and incited in every way, while the Georgian Dream government, which is dedicated to peace and the protection of Georgia’s real interests, is attacked in every way, and finally they even went so far as to impose incomprehensible sanctions.
It turns out that the reason for everything is Russia. It turns out that the Baltic political elites will only be friends with us if we blow ourselves up like a landmine, in order to harm Russia and prevent the Baltics from being threatened. To achieve this goal, they are ready to use any leverage, including impeding European integration”, Papuashvili writes.
