We take note of the decision from the Baltic states - the EU stands ready to take further actions, including sanctions, to hold those responsible for the violence to account, - the Spokesperson's Service of the European Commission told the special correspondent of InterPressNews in Brussels.
According to the press service, Georgian Dream’s policy of repression aims at undermining fundamental rights and freedoms and further shrinking the space for civil society to operate.
“We take note of the decision from the Baltic states. Georgian Dream’s policy of repression aims at undermining fundamental rights and freedoms and further shrinking the space for civil society to operate.
For this reason, the EU is already taking action: The EU has downgraded political contacts with Georgian authorities, other than those focused on finding a way out of the current situation; The EU has stopped direct assistance to the Georgian authorities amounting to over EUR 120 million; We have put on hold the EUR 30 million support measure for 2024 through the European Peace Facility and we do not plan any support measure in 2025;
The EU is stepping up its support to civil society and independent media; At the same time, we will continue to closely monitor the impact of the latest legislative initiatives on CSOs and independent media; More recently, the Council has suspended visa free travel for Georgian diplomats, officials and their families holding diplomatic and official passports.
The EU stands ready to take further actions, including sanctions, to hold those responsible for the violence to account”, the Spokesperson's Service said.
