"I don't think jackets cost 9 million GEL. Of course, this was a logical verdict, and Saakashvili must be held accountable for his crimes," said Georgian Dream MP Levan Machavariani in response to the sentencing of Georgia's third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, to nine years in prison.
The majority MP noted that he does not rule out the possibility that "within the framework of the temporary investigative commission that Parliament is working on, many more questions may arise regarding Saakashvili's crimes."
"Our opposition is packaging this case as the 'Jacket Case.' I don't think jackets cost 9 million GEL. The breakdown of expenditures clearly shows how he used budget funds. Of course, this was a logical verdict, and he must be held accountable for his crimes.
For the opposition, Mr. Saakashvili is their so-called leader, so they are obligated to defend him at all costs. The Strasbourg Court has confirmed all the rulings made by the Georgian judiciary regarding Mr. Saakashvili. They can appeal this case as well, but the outcome will be the same," Machavariani stated.
For reference, the court sentenced Mikheil Saakashvili to nine years in prison for the embezzlement of a large amount of budget funds, while Temur Janashia was fined 300,000 GEL.
