Gia Volski, the First Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, responded to the sentencing of Georgia’s third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, to nine years in prison. Volski criticized Saakashvili’s claims of having "saved" Georgia, arguing that he prioritized his own interests over the country's.
"Saakashvili claims he saved Georgia, as if Russia had planned to march toward Tbilisi and he personally stood in their way, or flew from cloud to cloud to stop the Russian army’s aggression in Poti – these are fabricated lies! Twenty percent of the country is occupied because Saakashvili put his personal interests above national interests," Volski stated.
According to Volski, Saakashvili misused state funds for personal luxury.
"What do you mean he didn’t hand over the country [to Russia]? Not only did he hand it over, but he did so willingly. Twenty percent of Georgia’s territory is occupied because Saakashvili failed to act in the national interest and instead chose his personal gain. On one hand, he pleased the Russians by allowing them to seize strategically important regions, and on the other, he portrayed himself as a hero fighting Russia in the eyes of the West, earning himself a red carpet welcome.
He built a palace, fulfilled all his desires, exiled or executed whomever he pleased, and spent as much public money as he wanted on cosmetics, nude paintings, teeth massages, and countless other unimaginable expenses.
This isn’t just about 9 million GEL—it’s about the sheer corruption and depravity of trampling over the country, torturing people, seizing property, and wasting resources on anything he desires. And that’s only the part we’ve managed to count.
How can a president spend so much money on Botox? Or vacations and travel? They called this case the ‘Jacket Case’—but that’s completely unfair and purely propaganda. It’s not just about suits. There were suits, watches, travel, entertainment, and an enormous amount of money wasted on weight loss, cosmetics, Botox, gifts, travel, and much more," Volski stated.
For reference, the court sentenced Mikheil Saakashvili to nine years in prison for the embezzlement of a large amount of public funds, while Teimuraz Janashia was fined 300,000 GEL.
