Aleko Elisashvili: Politics in Georgia is consumed by arrogance – That’s why there is no unity in the opposition

"I often feel melancholic at opposition meetings, thinking to myself, ‘How can you walk around with such arrogance?!’" – Aleko Elisashvili, one of the leaders of "Strong Georgia", stated on PalitraNews' program "360 Degrees."

According to Elisashvili, politicians in Georgia are excessively arrogant.

"Those in politics here are consumed by arrogance. Everyone has such a high opinion of themselves that just watching them is exhausting. At opposition meetings, I often think to myself, ‘How can you walk around with such arrogance?!’ Some of them appear on TV three times and start thinking they're the biggest deal," he said.

When asked by the host how he envisions unity with such people, Elisashvili responded: "I can hardly imagine it, which is exactly why we don’t have unity."

Elisashvili believes that continued protests on Rustaveli Avenue will put Georgia back on the international agenda.

"The protests have not stopped, despite assurances to Ivanishvili that they would fade away soon. No one has been intimidated. Of course, we are emotionally drained—it is exhausting. But I never believed it would disappear because that’s not in our nature. If the protests continue on Rustaveli, we will inevitably return to the international agenda," he noted.

Elisashvili emphasized that the opposition is constantly working with international partners to ensure that Georgia remains a priority in their discussions.

He also mentioned that if the planned March 31 protest is large-scale, it will once again attract international attention.

"We are working as much as possible on the international stage. Our coalition is doing everything to stay on the agenda. The March 31 rally must show that we have not given up. We are still protesting, still standing in the streets. This is the most devastating thing for the government. They couldn’t suppress the protest with beatings, intimidation, or fines."

He added that a very difficult spring lies ahead.

"We will put so much pressure on the government that they won’t be able to withstand it. The protest will grow, and it will become more radical. They have failed to break us, and they couldn’t erase the protest. The protest will not disappear because we have nowhere to retreat. Behind us is Georgia and its national interests," Elisashvili concluded.
