According to the Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, was “clearly involved” in the anti-government pre-election campaign. As Papuashvili told journalists, “no one has given diplomats the right to interfere in Georgia’s internal politics.”
“If someone doesn’t believe us, they can still believe those Europeans. Not long ago, for example, in Germany, before the elections, when Elon Musk made a statement regarding political parties, we saw that everyone responded at the level of the Chancellor. This was interference in the election campaign and internal politics by Elon Musk, who is a public figure and has already spoken out on many issues before. Didn’t the same German political groups interfere in Georgia’s election battles and internal politics with even worse methods? We have seen many such cases from government representatives. If we take Germany, for example, Mikhail Roth or Viola von Cramon, who directly participated in rallies supporting the opposition. As for diplomats, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, was directly involved in the election campaign. We remember his speeches, his accents. Sometimes he spoke to us with stories, sometimes with poems. He was clearly involved in the election campaign against the government. He financed non-governmental organizations, which were also directly involved in the election campaign,” Papuashvili said.
According to the Speaker of the Parliament, the Vienna Convention implies that diplomats are prohibited from interfering in the internal politics of the country.
He called on the ambassadors to return to their own diplomatic framework.
“Is anyone now appointed as a class teacher to interfere with us every day? The European Union evaluates our progress with relevant documents, including documents published every October that assess the progress of candidate countries. Now, in October, such a document was published, in which we had progress in almost all factors, except for one," Papuashvili said.
