According to Giga Bokeria, one of the leaders of the Federalist Party, while the protests continue in Georgia, the Georgian Dream is likely to remain isolated.
Bokeria assessed the meeting between the US Ambassador to Georgia and the Georgian Foreign Minister on PalitraNews.
As he noted, the meeting was not a recognition, because the government's "so-called successes have nothing to do with national interests."
"While the protests continue, the probability of their remaining in political isolation is high. We have not had a scenario where the free world recognized someone else as the government, so to be surprised by the fact that they met or talked to any ambassador, let alone outrage, is, in my opinion, inaccurate. I understand people's emotions, but politicians and people who are familiar with international relations should not express outrage in this way. They should not indirectly help Ivanishvili’s regime by portray something as a success what was not a success for the country. We should expose them precisely for the fact that their so-called successes have nothing to do with our national interests,” Bokeria said.
According to him, ambassadors talk to politically illegitimate regimes everywhere.
“The ambassadors are there to talk to politically illegitimate regimes everywhere, all over the world, including completely unacceptable regimes. As long as this government has real power, all international players will be in contact with them in some form, because for now, they have power. Therefore, we should not be hysterical about this. At this meeting, there was a very aggressive message in dry and diplomatic language, reminding of the step that is needed to normalize relations. In other words, they are in isolation,” Bokeria said.
According to him, Georgia needs a government that will not have a problem with legitimacy with international partners.
For information, the US Ambassador to Georgia met with Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili. As stated in a statement released by the embassy, the ambassador briefed Botchorishvili on the main priorities of President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio, as well as the steps "that Georgia can take to demonstrate its serious attitude towards improving relations with the United States."
