The court found the third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, guilty of illegally crossing the state border.
By the decision of Tbilisi City Court Judge Mikheil Jinjolia, Saakashvili was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison. However, he was also sentenced to 8 years for embezzlement of budget funds, and in total, he was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison. The verdict was met with discontent and shouts of "slaves" in the courtroom.
The third president did not attend the announcement of the verdict, even remotely from the Vivamedი clinic. He did not appear remotely at the last session either, although he could have enjoyed the exclusive right that the accused has, namely to make the final statement. He refused to appear at the session and requested that the trial be postponed until his recovery.
This is the second verdict that the Tbilisi City Court has issued in Saakashvili’s case in recent days. He now has only one criminal case left, which concerns the November 7 episode.
Mikheil Saakashvili was charged under Article 344 of the Criminal Code, which refers to the illegal crossing of the state border. The investigation into this fact began on October 1, 2021.
In the framework of the above-mentioned case, charges have been brought against 4 more individuals - Elguja Tsomaia, Zurab and Shalva Tsotsorias, and Giorgi Narimanidze. More specifically, Elguja Tsomaia is accused of aiding Mikheil Saakashvili in the illegal crossing of the border and of covering up the crime, while Zurab and Shalva Tsotsorias, as well as Giorgi Narimanidze, are accused of covering up the crime. They have been released on bail.
