Mamuka Mdinaradze: The norms of the Law on Broadcasting will not apply to online media in general, but will apply to the relevant online platforms of broadcasters

According to the Executive Secretary of the Georgian Dream, the majority leader, Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Law on Broadcasting will apply to the websites and social networks of broadcasters.

As for online media, as Mdinaradze stated at the briefing held after the majority session, the norms of the law will not apply to them.

“The Law on Broadcasting, the rules of conduct recognized by journalists, are being transferred to mandatory enforcement, due to the fact that it is being transferred to the sphere of state regulation. If before it was self-regulation and specific media outlets themselves had the right to respond to specific violations, now this function will be transferred to the National Communications Regulatory Commission.

Also, at today’s session of the majority, a decision was made regarding this issue that, in addition to the norms recognized by the Journalists’ Corps, the British Standard will also apply to the websites and social networks of broadcasters.

"Today, the question was relevant: will it apply to online media in general? - No. It will not apply to online media in general, but the norms of the law will apply to the relevant online platforms of broadcasters," Mdinaradze said.
