Temur Katamadze: The administration of the Migration Department, together with 'Vivamed,' carried out a scandalous special operation – they attempted to endanger my life by providing inadequate nutrition

The trial of activist Temur Katamadze is currently underway at the Tbilisi City Court. Temur Katamadze himself is attending the hearing.

During the trial, Katamadze stated that he had been subjected to psychological pressure by the Migration Department and the "Vivamedi" clinic.

He explained that additional time is needed to gather the necessary documentation regarding this matter, which is why he filed a motion to postpone the court session.

"In the written statement I submitted, I described the psychological pressure exerted on me by the administration of the Migration Department, the intentional delay in fulfilling my requests, and the restriction of my fundamental rights in a timely manner. Additionally, I want to inform you that after ending my 48-day hunger strike, I was transferred to the 'Vivamedi' clinic for treatment on March 4, where the Migration Administration carried out a scandalous special operation against me with the participation of the 'Vivamedi' clinic administration. Both parties jointly attempted to endanger my life by deliberately damaging my stomach and organs through improper nutrition. For someone like me, who had been on a 48-day hunger strike, this was devastating.

On the night of March 5, I was shown the 'hell' of Vivamedi; my life was saved only by the grace of God. Due to the psychological pressure exerted by both the representatives of the Migration Department and the medical staff of 'Vivamedi,' my willpower was broken, and they forced me into complete submission. As a result, I was compelled to stop my nutritional recovery treatment at 'Vivamedi' and return to the migration facility. I took five food containers from the clinic to migration, which are now kept in my room as evidence for future proceedings," Katamadze stated.

According to him, due to the "threat to his life" at the clinic, he filed a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office on March 17, demanding an investigation into the alleged crime committed against him.

He also claimed that the Migration Department is attempting to expel him from Georgia for political reasons.

At the court hearing, the opposing party is represented by the Border Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A representative of the department deemed Katamadze's motion to postpone the hearing unjustified and argued that the session should not be delayed.

Katamadze is represented by the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA). His lawyer, Mariam Gabroshvili, explained that traveling from Georgia to Turkey would pose a danger to Temur Katamadze, which is why he is seeking refugee or humanitarian status in Georgia. According to her, Katamadze has been requesting this status for years and has met the necessary criteria, yet the state has denied him three times. The lawyer added that Katamadze began publicly expressing his position after receiving these rejections, as he believed the government’s denial of his asylum request was unjustified.

For context, activist Temur Katamadze was initially detained by the police in Batumi under administrative procedures. However, after being released from custody, he was arrested again. During his second arrest, the police accused Katamadze of lacking legal residency status in Georgia.
