"For five days, it was a real simulation of war—an attempt to overthrow the government through violent means. Today, 300-350 people gather daily; this is an organized activist group," Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated on Public Broadcaster.
"They like to count from November 28, but the protests actually started on October 26. For five days, it was a real simulation of war—an attempt to overthrow the government by force. The current protests, where 300-350 people gather daily, consist of an organized activist group—NGOs and political parties. Those five days were, in reality, large-scale violent protests—they started on November 28 and lasted for five days," Kobakhidze said.
According to him, "serious amounts of money" are involved in the process.
"For five days, there were large-scale violent protests. After that, on average, 300-400 people gather. This is the real situation. In reality, this is a funded activist group. They even contribute to the budget—5,000 GEL per person, voluntarily filling the budget. It’s truly a bizarre phenomenon. But if we put irony aside, it shows that serious financial resources are involved in these processes. However, they are not achieving their goal," Kobakhidze said, explaining that there is one simple reason for this:
"This is a country with culture. The collective 'United National Movement' cannot have public support under any circumstances. It is impossible. The majority of the Georgian people will never follow this path. How can anyone expect the majority of the Georgian people to support Saakashvili's party, Gvaramia's party, Khazaradze's party, or Gakharia's party? How can anyone have such an expectation?" the Prime Minister stated.
Kobakhidze dismissed claims that protesters are distancing themselves from political parties, arguing that their demand for snap elections contradicts such statements.
"If we had received not 1,120,000 votes, but the 750,000 they got, who would have come to power? The collective 'United National Movement.' If they are distancing themselves from these parties, why are they demanding snap elections? Let’s imagine, theoretically, that snap elections are held. Why do they want this? Because they don’t want 'Georgian Dream' to win again. The 300 people protesting are opposition-minded; they want 'Georgian Dream' to get 40% instead of 54% in the next elections. And what happens then? Saakashvili, Gvaramia, Khazaradze, and Gakharia come to power. If they are demanding snap elections, how are they distancing themselves from them? What new party will emerge in two months? When you demand snap elections, you know exactly who you want in power—the parties of Saakashvili, Gvaramia, Khazaradze, and Gakharia. This is a complete farce. The reality is that the only people attending these protests are those who voted for one of these four parties and are now disappointed because they lost the elections," he stated.
Kobakhidze emphasized that the real reason for the protests was not any specific statement but rather the election results.
"Why do I mention October 26, while they only talk about November 28? Because the real reason for these protests was not any particular statement. Do they have any demands related to Eurointegration today? They claimed to be protesting for Eurointegration, yet they have only two demands—release of prisoners and snap elections. Where is the European Union in this?
In 2017, we included Article 78 in the constitution, yet the radical opposition did not support these amendments. As for our statement on November 28, it had a very significant result—it ended the blackmail over the negotiations. Our country could not have endured constant blackmail. We acted in the national interest. The European Council meets every three months. Just look at what was planned: they were supposed to meet in December and say, 'We are not opening negotiations,' then again in March, June, September, and December, continuing this indefinitely until 2028. Who knows what would have happened in 2029? Our country simply could not have endured this. Our main goal was to prevent the country from being held hostage to constant blackmail, and we achieved this result," Kobakhidze concluded.
