In the past, we went through a very harsh repressive system under the previous government. We fought against it, but not these people who speak today on behalf of "Georgian Dream." They did not fight; during the previous system, they remained silent, subdued, and passive, or they were its supporters," said the head of the "House of Justice," Eka Beselia, on Palitra News' program "360 Degrees," regarding the parliamentary investigative commission.
According to Beselia, this investigative commission is merely a staged spectacle for their supporters, creating the illusion that they are continuing the fight against the problems of the previous government.
"The least convincing aspect of this investigative commission is its mandate, content, and form. The most unreliable and untrustworthy part is its motivation for creation. Everything is measured by why you do what you do. This entire initiative has one main message—it's a spectacle, not a genuine execution of its mandate, but rather a show for their supporters, as if they are continuing the fight against past wrongdoings. Yet, we have these problems in the present, the same problems we fought against in the past.
I have always maintained and will continue to maintain the position that we endured a very harsh repressive system under the previous government. We fought against it, but not these people who now speak on behalf of "Georgian Dream." They did not fight; they remained silent, subdued, and passive, or they were supporters of that system.
We fought, investigated those systemic crimes, and stated that in order to prevent such things from happening again, we must conduct a fundamental reform of the justice system.
What are the investigative bodies examining today? Why do these parliament members have no reaction when they meet the president at the airport at 5:00 AM and attack her, or when they do the same to a former prime minister from "Georgian Dream"? No investigation is being conducted, no investigative action is taking place.
Tonight, students were detained, and none of the arresting officers followed the country’s constitution, arrest procedures, legal norms, or human rights. Why is there no reaction to this? Where is parliamentary oversight, which we strengthened during my time in parliament, codified in regulations, passed laws for, established rules, and built practices to prevent such lawlessness as we see today?
This is why the investigative commission is a sham, unreliable, and untrustworthy. What are they investigating—cases from 15 years ago, which have already been addressed? If there is a specific person who was not investigated, summon them and question them. This is a deception that fills an empty parliament, where one party speaks to itself after fraudulent elections and turns a blind eye to systematic human rights violations.
Therefore, it does not matter what Tsulukiani, Matikashvili, or Mdinaradze say; their words have lost all legal and political weight," Beselia stated.
The lawyer also spoke about the fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili, and the opposition parties, noting that a joint visit is planned in several countries.
"Criticism, especially from the 'United National Movement,' is tolerable. Interestingly, President Zurabishvili does not react to it or take a strong position. In the working environment where the parties gather, the 'United National Movement' is also present. Both sides understand that there are differing opinions on this issue, and that will remain the case. However, there are topics on which there is a common position.
Public statements made by parties are one thing, but when the president says that forming a single bloc or a unified party is not an option and not worth the effort, the discussion is about creating a unified action platform, both domestically and internationally. This platform will unite everyone around key demands—not just political parties, but, first and foremost, the people who have been protesting in the streets for days, demanding new elections and the release of political prisoners.
A joint visit to several capitals is planned (by Salome Zurabishvili and opposition parties). This format is aimed at organizing several joint visits to different countries. It is crucial for the international community and the country's international partners to see a unified stance on key demands, as well as a strong platform, a political core, and a political process in which the president and parties voice the people's demands," Beselia stated.
