Theona Akubardia: "The Venice Commission's conclusion has nothing to do with participation in local elections" – Discussion about the October elections is part of the "Georgian Dream" agenda

Bringing the local elections into March is definitely part of the "Georgian Dream" agenda to cover up the main demand of public protests – for new parliamentary elections, said Theona Akubardia, a member of the "Georgian for Georgia" party.

According to Akubardia, the discussion about these elections is now part of the "Georgian Dream" agenda.

"The Venice Commission's conclusion about participation in elections is not related at all, because even before the parliamentary elections, the Venice Commission had sent a negative conclusion about the electoral code in local elections, which at that time the president vetoed, and which was overcome by the 'Georgian Dream.'

The change in electoral legislation once again shows the challenge and fear of Ivanishvili's regime regarding free and fair elections. The current discussion about the October elections is certainly part of the 'Georgian Dream' agenda. Until now, we have not acted according to the agenda of any party, and of course, we will not do so now," said Theona Akubardia.

For reference, the Venice Commission has published a conclusion on the changes made to the Organic Law of Georgia "The Election Code of Georgia" regarding local self-government elections and recommends the repeal of the changes.

Furthermore, the commission notes that the amendments to the "Election Code of Georgia" were made through an expedited procedural process and emphasizes that any successful change in electoral legislation should be implemented following public consultations with all interested parties and broad consensus.
