Tazo Datunashvili: Why didn't our hands wither when we voted for Grigol Vashadze in 2018? What he said in the commission is harmful to the state—let it be on his conscience

"Why didn't our hands wither when we voted for Grigol Vashadze in 2018?! Besides the fact that he attended the commission, the content of what he said was politically very lowly,"—this is how Tazo Datunashvili, a member of Lelo – Strong Georgia, responded to the appearance of former Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze at the parliamentary temporary investigative commission examining the activities of the United National Movement’s government.

As Datunashvili stated on PalitraNews' program Resume, attending the parliamentary investigative commission is an acknowledgment of this parliament’s legitimacy.

"It was absolutely disgraceful for Grigol Vashadze to sit there, and everything he said was shameful. Why didn’t our hands wither when we voted for Grigol Vashadze in 2018?! What he said is harmful to this state. Besides the fact that he attended, the content of his speech was politically very lowly. Everything he did at the commission is on his conscience. Attending this commission means recognizing the parliament. What I saw there was an example of Soviet-style sycophancy. He was not saying the right things," said Tazo Datunashvili.

According to him, the purpose of creating the parliamentary temporary investigative commission is not to examine the activities of the United National Movement’s government but to persecute political opponents.

"This has nothing to do with any kind of analysis or investigation of the United National Movement period. It is about persecuting current political opponents. They are pursuing active political opponents and do not even have the ability to disguise the process to make it seem as if it’s about the United National Movement.

It is an open case of political persecution aimed at targeting political opponents who are causing them problems today, such as Strong Georgia and our other colleagues in the opposition. This is not an investigation of the United National Movement period; this is a masquerade. Participating in it is entirely unacceptable because it is being conducted in an illegitimate parliament," said Tazo Datunashvili.
