"Ivanishvili is mistaken if he thinks he can still trade in political prisoners, people’s freedom, and the imprisonment of political opponents – what worked for him in the past will no longer work with the European Union," said Tina Bokuchava, leader of "Unity – National Movement", during a briefing at the coalition's office.
According to Bokuchava, Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of Georgian Dream, will eventually be forced to relinquish power as he faces growing international isolation, which "no betrayal commission, repression, or arrests can cover up."
*"Yesterday was a particularly difficult day for Ivanishvili’s regime, as it came under a three-pronged attack from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. We heard the first official assessment from the Trump administration, where the State Department condemned Georgian Dream’s anti-democratic actions.
Vice President J.D. Vance stated that Georgian Dream cannot secure a democratic mandate by silencing or imprisoning its opponents and that ignoring the will of its own people is unacceptable.
This strong statement confirms that Ivanishvili’s propaganda is aimed at misleading the Georgian public by suggesting that under President Trump, the U.S. will reset relations with Ivanishvili and lift the sanctions imposed by the Biden administration. A reset in relations will only happen when we remove Ivanishvili’s Russian, anti-democratic, anti-American, pro-Chinese, pro-Russian, and pro-Iranian government."*
Bokuchava noted that the EU also showed no tolerance for Georgian Dream’s actions, with High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice President Kaja Kallas and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos issuing a joint emergency statement, emphasizing that "Georgian Dream is undermining democracy and taking steps that are fundamentally incompatible with EU values."
"The European Union explicitly states that these values are non-negotiable. So Ivanishvili is mistaken if he thinks he can still trade in political prisoners, people’s freedom, and the imprisonment of political opponents. What worked for him in the past will no longer work with the EU. The world has changed, the EU has changed, but, in typical dictator fashion, Ivanishvili remains completely detached from reality and is driving the country toward disaster."
Bokuchava highlighted that the UK delivered the third major blow to the regime by sanctioning the heads of the judicial clan – Murusidze and Chinchaladze, who she described as "the key enforcers of unjust political decisions in Ivanishvili’s judicial system."
*"We have information that the UK's sanctions policy will expand. We have been working on this for a long time to ensure that sanctions not only target Ivanishvili but also extend to his family members and his enablers, such as Irakli Rukhadze and the financial clique that upholds his illegitimate government.
No betrayal commission, no repression, and no arrests can cover up the deepening international isolation Ivanishvili faces. In the end, he will have to compromise, he will have to relinquish power. However, through our joint efforts and nationwide protests, we aim to intensify the pressure on Ivanishvili and ensure that he gives up power as soon as possible," Bokuchava concluded.
