Badri Grigalashvili is also leaving the party "Girchi – More Freedom."
Like his teammates Tsotne Koberidze and Boris Chele Kurua, who have already left the party, Grigalashvili speaks about the need for change.
He states that he is leaving because he no longer sees the point of being involved in politics in its current form and content.
Moreover, Grigalashvili believes that, in general, what is happening in the opposition right now is leading nowhere, and "no one wants to face this reality."
"For the first time, it was difficult for me to take such a step, but I have decided to leave Girchi, my second family, where I spent eight years of my conscious life.
In 2018, Marita Ratiani wrote to me, saying, 'You write interesting comments, come talk to people from the party page.' That’s how my first steps in Girchi began. As a third-year student, I was entrusted with speaking on behalf of the party. Since then, Japhara (Zurab Japaridze) gave me every opportunity to freely do what I believed in – in this sense, this party was a unique space in Georgian politics, where leaders did not treat young people as mere tools.
Here, I learned politics, relationships, the joy of helping people, how to accept defeat and rise again. Here, I made friends with whom I share countless adventures. Girchi gave me a life that helped shape me as a person. In this madness, despite all the difficulties, free people managed to find each other, and that has kept us going until now.
I am leaving because I no longer see the point of being in politics in this form and content. What I liked about Girchi – the process of changing the rules of the political game – we have not been doing that for a while now.
In general, what is happening in the opposition right now is leading nowhere, but no one wants to acknowledge it. I am convinced that we no longer have the luxury of avoiding, first and foremost, the need for changes within ourselves.
Of course, Ivanishvili contributed to this process, but the opposition spectrum has not even tried to genuinely respond to the challenges. We have been going in circles for 12 years, playing the same game with the opponent using the same tactics, and we keep losing in the same way every time. Then, this failed strategy is blamed on the people, and thus, a new, vicious cycle begins. No one wants to admit mistakes because doing so might force some to realize that they should leave politics altogether – and that fear drives them further into denial. As a result, stubbornly clinging to mistakes, we are no longer taken seriously.
I, too, bear my share of responsibility for this failure, and I apologize that I was not able to do more.
In short, I believe that this battle can only be won through complete honesty.
Without that, the opposition will never regain the trust of enough people to bring about real change.
If anything has the power to spark a massive wave of protest right now, it is another mistake made by Ivanishvili. That will happen with or without me, and I will be at the frontlines, regardless of party affiliation. However, the role of a politician and a political party is not to wait for the opponent's mistakes – they must create something new themselves.
At this moment, the exact opposite is happening everywhere. Petty point-scoring, insults, and endless discussions about unity are dominating the discourse when, in reality, we should be explaining to people who we are, what we want, and how we are truly better than Ivanishvili.
I apologize if my decision has upset Girchi members. I have felt your support in many difficult moments, and I want you to know that your attitude toward me is the most valuable thing I have gained during this time.
I am not running away from anything.
Now, I have to find my own path in this struggle again, and as much as I can, I will try to correct the mistakes I have seen.
Many battles lie ahead, and I still believe that we can build a better country from here," he wrote on Facebook.
The leader of "Girchi – More Freedom," Zurab (Girchi) Japaridze, thanked Tsotne Koberidze, Boris Chele Quru, and Badri Grigalashvili on social media for standing by his side during "the most difficult times" and for supporting "every decision, whether right or wrong, in their view." He wished them success in their new endeavors and added, "We will stand together on the barricades."
