I cannot explain that a judge can be sanctioned just because he/she carries out professional activities - not a single argument has been made about the illegality of any decision. The appearance of judges' names in the sanctioned lists indicates that the pressure is already in another direction, most likely the aim is strengthening the self-preservation instinct in individual judges to ensure the collapse of one of the branches of government, - Supreme Court Chairperson Nino Kadagidze stated in the Supreme Court, where Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze met with judges and members of the High Council of Justice.
As Nino Kadagidze noted, it is especially worrying and sad that the pressure is coming from states, external actors, whose democracy had until now been based on the principles of protecting the individual independence of judges.
"I cannot accept or explain the fact that a judge can be dismissed simply because he is carrying out his professional activities. Especially in the conditions and circumstances when not a single substantiated argument has been made about the illegality of any decision. This pressure is not new to us, naturally, each of us has become accustomed to it over the years. Until now, I have always believed that this pressure, the excessive and intensified interest of external actors in the court and the justice system, was mainly aimed at consolidating society's negative attitudes towards the court and thus politicizing the judicial system. However, recently, it seems that these targets have changed. The appearance of judges' names in the sanctioned lists indicates that the pressure is already in another direction, most likely the aim is strengthening the self-preservation instinct in individual judges to ensure the collapse of one of the branches of government. I would like to say that fortunately some people have forgotten that Georgian judges have priorities, professional self-respect and high social responsibility, so we have no doubts about the stability of our system, the solidity of each of my colleagues.
I would like to thank each of you once again for the perseverance that each of you shows and I deeply believe that each of us is aware of the main goal for which we, the Georgian judiciary, are fighting. Naturally, in these difficult circumstances, which I am deeply convinced will end very soon and in our favor, it is very important for the judiciary to listen to the positions and visions of the executive branch," said Nino Kadagidze.
