"I have serious doubts that this is a corrupt grant, and it is declared as though it is a free competition.
No one is a fool here, and we all understand very well who, in the end, will receive this money," said the Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, when speaking with journalists about the grant competition announced by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office ahead of the municipal elections in Georgia.
He noted that this serves “exactly the same purposes as the previous American funding, which has been exposed by the new American administration as money spent for destabilizing other countries, for regime change”.
“Now there is an attempt to fill a certain vacuum, to replace the American funds, and what used to be done by the right hand of American funds will now be done by the left hand, using British or other European funds. I have serious doubts that this is a corrupt grant. It is declared as though it is a free competition. No one is a fool here, and we all understand very well who will eventually get this money. I suspect that it is already known in advance that this money will be given to organizations like 'ESFED' and similar millionaire organizations. This is hypocrisy and corruption when the outcome is already known in advance, and it is presented as though there is an open competition. They want to deceive the Georgian public, including the British, telling their taxpayers as if there are competitions and wondering who will win and whether ESFED will get enough points. There will be speculation about who will get it and who won’t. The fact that this ‘clownery’ is being staged so shamelessly shows that there will never be any good outcome from such a situation,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
For information, the United Kingdom has announced a grant competition related to the local self-government elections in Georgia scheduled for October 2025. Specifically, the information released stated that FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office) is announcing a competition for Georgian non-governmental organizations until April 25, 2025, to support the effective conduct of local government elections in Georgia in October 2025.
