“I want to note with sorrow that today, when we see such unfounded and, in many cases, subjective decisions, it deals a very serious blow to the image of the United Kingdom,” said Georgian Dream MP Aluda Gudushauri, in response to the United Kingdom sanctioning four Georgian officials.
According to him, a sanctions war has been launched against the sovereignty of Georgia.
“Sanctions are being imposed on individuals from various agencies. It is absolutely clear that this is being done to attack our institutions. I want to note with regret that the United Kingdom, which has indeed been a model country in terms of its history and legal principles, is now, in the 21st century, making decisions that are often unfounded and subjective — and this severely damages its image as well,” Gudushauri stated.
For context, the UK government has sanctioned four individuals under its Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. According to the British government, this package of sanctions targets Georgian officials responsible for serious human rights violations under the 2020 Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations.
Sanctions have been imposed on Prosecutor General Giorgi Gabitashvili, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Shalva Bedoidze, Deputy Director of the Special Tasks Department Mirza Kezevadze, and Head of the Special Investigation Service Karlo Katsitadze. The sanctions include asset freezes, director disqualification sanctions, and travel bans.
