"This is a critically important resolution on the path to delegitimizing the government, and an equally important emphasis is placed on what the hatred collector Tsulukiani is doing with the investigative commission, which directly contradicts every principle for which the Council of Europe was established," – said Tazo Datunashvili, a member of the “Lelo – Strong Georgia” coalition, regarding the Council of Europe resolution.
“The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has once again fully aligned itself with the main demands of the Georgian people – that new elections be called and political prisoners be released. Otherwise, no representative of ‘Georgian Dream’ will be able to represent Georgia at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Georgia has been a member of this organization since 1999, and never before has there been such pressure.
This is a major resolution on the road to the government’s delegitimization. It also places strong emphasis on what Tsulukiani, the ‘collector of hatred,’ is doing with the investigative commission – a body that goes directly against the principles for which the Council of Europe and all the parliamentary delegations of European countries stand. They have stated clearly that this commission is a tool for political persecution,” said Tazo Datunashvili.
Datunashvili also addressed the UK’s sanctions on the heads of Georgia’s law enforcement agencies. In his view, the sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom target those individuals who have destroyed the rule of law, the independence of investigations, and the institution of the police in the country.
“These are the people who use their institutions to restrict the freedom of Georgian citizens, harm their health, and torture them. And now our friends are punishing them. We have no means to find justice within the country. There is no investigation, and citizens have no opportunity to fairly confront state institutions. These sanctions will continue. Evading these sanctions is impossible because the banks operating in Georgia are listed on the London Stock Exchange. Therefore, any individual or organization that tries to help these people bypass sanctions will be punished the same way. This is an attempt to bring Ivanishvili’s regime to its senses and stop the repression of society and the killing of democracy. Otherwise, the sanctions will methodically reach the oligarch himself and the highest levels of political responsibility,” Datunashvili stated.
