The reason for my resignation [from the post of Prime Minister] was that the person who promised the country and the team that he was leaving politics completely and forever, fully entered the process and managed the process in such a way that influenced the decision of each of you - at some point, everyone disappeared! When you received a call from Bidzina, you hid and disappeared! That is why I made the decision that I made! - this is how Giorgi Gakharia explained the decision to resign from the post of head of government on February 18, 2021, which, in turn, was related to the detention of Nika Melia.
As Gakharia stated at the session of the parliamentary investigative commission, no one has influenced his decisions, while Bidzina Ivanishvili intimidated the team.
“You were afraid of Bidzina, who called you and told you: be silent, stand aside and do what needs to be done! - You were afraid of this! That's why I resigned,” - said Gakharia.
He answered the question of why Nika Melia was not arrested, if the then Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri was ready to arrest.
“You arrested Melia in such a way and in such a form that you had to release him later - instead of Melia serving his sentence today, he is out! Melia should have been arrested so that he would not be out now, he should be in prison. If Melia had been arrested the way he was arrested then, of course, I had an idea that he would be out. Melia should have been arrested so that the issue of amnesty would not arise. This is the main thing!”, - said Giorgi Gakharia.
