“The UNM-affiliated parties will be banned this year – I am confident the Constitutional Court will have no other option if it judges this issue even slightly objectively,” stated Mamuka Mdinaradze, the leader of the parliamentary majority, while speaking to journalists.
Mdinaradze said that following his statement yesterday, “some people got their hopes up,” but he confirmed that a constitutional lawsuit to ban these parties will be filed before October.
“So that no one gets overly hopeful—on our end, everything that depends on Parliament will be completed before the elections, that is, by October, including the submission of the lawsuit. Only the decision of the Constitutional Court will remain. After my statement yesterday, some people seemed encouraged, but the extension of the deadline, which the commission rightfully requested, only pushed the process by a maximum of 2-3 months. On our side, everything will be finalized by September, including the filing of the constitutional lawsuit regarding the banning of the UNM-affiliated parties,” said Mdinaradze.
According to the majority leader, there’s a high chance that “foreign sponsors” will instruct the opposition parties to participate in the upcoming local elections.
“There’s a high likelihood that, since this will be their last election — I’m referring to the United National Movement and its cluster — their foreign patrons will instruct them to participate. Sometimes bad things come with benefits — I believe the response from the people, and subsequently from our party, will be very fitting. First, the people will deliver their proper response, and then we will respond with our constitutional lawsuit. I am absolutely convinced that the Constitutional Court will have no other option, if it even slightly judges objectively. The UNM-affiliated parties will be banned this year,” Mdinaradze said.
