Our position is unequivocal - Georgia condemns the operation of the airport [Sokhumi Airport] in violation of international norms! This is not just our position - the International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO supports this, - Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili said in response to a question about the start of regular flights from Sokhumi to Russia.

To another question, whether they have addressed the Russian side, Davitashvili stated that this position is always stated openly and this is understandable to the Russian side.

“Our position is unequivocal - Georgia condemns the operation of the airport in violation of international norms! This is not only our position - the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) supports this. We have close relations and cooperation with ICAO. This contradicts the principles of ICAO. It also contradicts the Law on Occupation.

When our Civil Aviation Agency cannot carry out inspections in accordance with international norms, including the assessment of safety norms, ICAO does not recognize this.

We are talking about the operation of several sanctioned companies, but we understand that this is beyond our capabilities, however, our position before the international community is very clear,” said Levan Davitashvili.

When asked by a journalist whether there will be any retaliatory measures against Russian companies that fly to Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi, the Minister stated that companies that violate the Law on Occupation cannot operate in Georgia.

“All the tools at our disposal are being used, and in the event that specific sanctioned companies operate, but we will not have the opportunity to influence them, this is an objective circumstance. This is an occupied and unrecognized territory,” said Levan Davitashvili.

Direct regular flights between Russia and occupied Abkhazia will resume today for the first time in 30 years.

According to Russian media, the first flight will be operated by UVT Aero on the Vnukovo-Sokhumi route.

According to them, the first flight was scheduled for May 3, but due to increased demand, the airline decided to operate an additional flight on May 1.

Flights to Sokhumi will also be operated by Ifly Airlines from Moscow and by NordStar from Moscow and Krasnoyarsk.
