Shalva Papuashvili: After the spokespersons of the Biden administration went silent, the European Commission's spokesperson began to speak – it is clear and evident, like on the palm of a hand, that these are orchestrated attacks being carried out against the Georgian people

After the spokespersons of the Biden administration went silent, the spokesperson of the European Commission began to speak — this is what the Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, told journalists in response to a statement from the European Commission’s press service, which said that the actions of the Georgian government are alarming and do not align with what EU institutions expect from a candidate country.

According to Papuashvili, it is clear and as obvious as the palm of a hand that these are orchestrated attacks being carried out against the Georgian people.

“It’s right there in the open — after the Biden administration’s spokespersons went silent, the European Commission’s spokesperson started talking. I want to tell the European Commission’s press service that these orchestrated attacks against the Georgian people are now very clear and obvious.

As for European institutions and coordinated actions, let me remind you: thanks to the U.S. foreign agents registry, we learned that American lobbyists were apparently writing resolutions for the European Parliament. The very resolutions that were adopted — it turns out they were written by American lobbyists. I don’t know who writes statements for the European Commission’s spokesperson, but perhaps it’s time the spokesperson focused on the fact that now, after the U.S. stopped harmful funding — which was previously spread through USAID and other channels to support disinformation, violent groups, and propaganda — it is now the EU budget that has become the main source encouraging propaganda, hate speech, and violence.

So if the European Commission’s spokesperson considers themselves competent to speak on Georgian matters, perhaps they can answer whether they plan to review funding from the EU budget that is being funneled into political parties — which has been proven. It has been confirmed that through the EED, an organization founded by the European Commission, EU-allocated funds are financing radical political parties, political groups, disinformation outlets, and anti-Georgian propaganda. If they insist on speaking about Georgia, they should respond to this,” Papuashvili said.

For context, the European Commission’s press service stated that the U.S. Congress’ adoption of the “MEGOBARI Act” demonstrates that the international community is closely watching developments in Georgia. As they told Interpressnews, the actions taken by the Georgian government are alarming and do not meet the expectations EU institutions have for a candidate country. They called on the Georgian government to repeal legislation that is incompatible with EU values.
