This act has only one purpose — to create informational noise. Just as it has been up to now, it will continue to be within the authority of the U.S. President to decide whether or not to impose sanctions on someone.

The President neither needs permission from this act, nor can this act obligate the President to do anything — said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili while speaking to journalists about the "MEGOBARI Act."

According to him, this is an “absolutely contentless act.”

“This act has only one purpose — to create informational noise. Its purpose was to allow the radical opposition and foreign-funded NGOs to hold briefings for two days. Its purpose was to provoke a reaction from the European Commission’s spokesperson. The aim was to inject hysteria and informational noise into Georgian politics. This is an act completely devoid of content, because the U.S. President does not need anyone’s authority to impose sanctions on whoever he deems necessary. And no one can obligate the U.S. President to impose sanctions through this act.

Just as it was previously the U.S. President’s prerogative to decide whether or not to impose sanctions, it will remain so in the future. The President does not need permission from this act, nor can this act impose any obligation on the President. That’s the reality — the creation of informational noise. It’s clear that the title of this act does not match its content, and we’ve all figured that out.

Take a look and see what the act calls on the parties to do! It calls for members elected to Parliament — both the opposition and the majority — to work together. So where is the opposition? If this act is like a Bible to them, where are they? We don’t see them! Apparently, Joe Wilson is on a different track than President Trump. The act says that USAID is obligated to develop a strategy regarding Georgia.

The only content, meaning, and purpose of this act is the creation of informational noise. We saw that they held briefings for one day — they didn’t even have enough to talk about on the second day. The U.S.–Georgia relationship was damaged by the Biden administration, which worsened relations with the most trusted partner of the American people through its own actions. It attempted to change the government and was involved in undermining the Georgian authorities by funding violent groups, propaganda, disinformation, and attacks on the Georgian Church.

That’s why we are communicating with the new administration specifically on this issue. They know our expectations — that what the previous administration damaged must be corrected, and we are ready for that,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
