"Resetting relations is fundamentally important because the attitude that existed over the years is categorically unacceptable — America should be our strategic partner, our friend, and not a ruler," said Kakha Kaladze, General Secretary of Georgian Dream, responding to the statement from the U.S. Embassy in Georgia.

Kaladze expressed confidence that the honorary chairman of Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili, will himself explain the refusal to meet with U.S. Ambassador Robin Dunnigan.

"I am confident that Mr. Bidzina himself will provide clarification regarding this matter. However, I will share my personal position. We have said many times before, and I want to confirm once again, that it is fundamentally important to start a new chapter in relations. We wholeheartedly welcome this. Resetting relations is fundamentally important because the attitude that existed over the years is categorically unacceptable. America should be our strategic partner, our friend, not a ruler. The attitude that relations must be restored is, of course, important, and we welcome it, but it must be friendly and based on partnership.

Several officials of our country have been sanctioned, including Bidzina Ivanishvili — and for what?! For defending our country's interests and not allowing anyone the opportunity for the same processes to take place in Georgia as in Ukraine. We defend our country's interests, we do not quarrel or fight with anyone. We defend our country, our people, and our country’s future. Yesterday you saw the U.S. President’s congratulation to President Kavelashvili and the Georgian people. We, of course, welcome this. It is important for us to start relations from a new page and to reset the relationship," Kaladze said.

For reference, the U.S. Embassy released a statement noting that the honorary chairman of Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili, refused to meet with U.S. Ambassador Robin Dunnigan in Georgia. According to the Embassy, the message from the Trump administration was to be conveyed at the meeting.

Bidzina Ivanishvili refused to meet with Ambassador Dunnigan, where he was to hear a message from the Trump administration. At the request of Secretary of State Rubio, on May 22, Ambassador Dunnigan requested a meeting with Bidzina Ivanishvili to communicate the administration’s message and once again convey specific steps that the Georgian government can take to demonstrate that it is serious about resetting relations with the United States. We hope the Georgian government sincerely wishes to return to 33 years of partnership and friendship with America and the American people,” the statement reads.
