According to Davit Jandieri, the lawyer of Giorgi Bachiashvili, former head of the Co-Investment Fund, Bachiashvili has named specific individuals who were on the plane that brought him to Georgia.
Jandieri made this statement after leaving the Rustavi No. 12 Penitentiary Institution.
Jandieri did not directly answer whether the named individual is a high-ranking official from the police or any other agency.
“Today, we had the opportunity to discuss in detail the issues related to his statement and his transfer to Georgia. Until now, we were occupied with other matters and had only general information. Today was the first meeting where I learned a significant amount of information. We will request an investigation from the prosecution. This is a complex and multifaceted issue, requiring extensive investigative actions. However, based on the information provided by Giorgi, I can confidently say that this information is verifiable if there is a willingness to do so. Giorgi is ready to provide full and comprehensive information to the investigation,” Jandieri stated.
According to him, the events described by Bachiashvili involve multiple criminal offenses.
“I can tell you that what relates to his transfer was completely outside the legal framework; his ‘detention’ was not lawful. On the other hand, it’s difficult to qualify the events he describes because we are not talking about a single crime but a series of crimes. This process did not involve just one specific person but a group of people, and it concerns quite serious and grave events.
His transportation was carried out via Airzena, and there were several people on board. I’ll refrain from saying more, but they were not flight attendants,” Jandieri stated.
When asked whether the individuals on board were law enforcement officers, Jandieri did not provide a direct answer.
“There are people he doesn’t know but can identify, and there is one whose name and surname he knows. We cannot say it was the police, but there are various agencies,” Jandieri said.
When asked whether the person named by Bachiashvili is a high-ranking official from any agency, the lawyer did not respond.
“I’ll refrain from disclosing this specific detail, but he provided this information with reference to a specific person,” Jandieri stated.
For reference, according to the State Security Service, on May 26, 2025, following an anonymous tip, Giorgi Bachiashvili, a wanted and convicted individual under a red notice, was detained near the so-called green border between Tsiteli Khidi and Sadakhlo.
The former general director of the Co-Investment Fund, convicted of misappropriating cryptocurrency belonging to “Georgian Dream” founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, has been sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment. Additionally, he faces charges in two ongoing cases.
Bachiashvili has been charged under Article 344, Part 1 of the Georgian Criminal Code, which pertains to illegally crossing the state border and carries a penalty of imprisonment from three to five years.
He also faces charges in the “Mtkvari HPP” case under Article 2201, Part 2 of the Georgian Criminal Code, which pertains to the failure or improper performance of official duties by a person with special authority, resulting in severe consequences. This charge carries a penalty of imprisonment from two to five years.
