“The ongoing events in the world have significantly increased the importance of diversifying transport and energy corridors. The role of the so-called “Middle Corridor” connecting Asia and Europe has become particularly relevant for Georgia in terms of unhindered and efficient transportation of cargo and energy carriers between East and West, within the framework of which, during the reporting period, significant steps were taken towards further strengthening bilateral relations both in the region and with Asian countries.
After the adoption of the joint statement on the establishment of a strategic partnership, cooperation with China has noticeably intensified in the fields of politics, economics, tourism, transport, and education. Significant results have been achieved in improving the legal framework and deepening trade and economic relations.
On September 11-12, 2024, the First Vice Prime Minister of Georgia paid a working visit to China, within the framework of which a memorandum was signed between the governments of Georgia and China on the joint development of the Middle Corridor.
Of particular note is the introduction of a visa-free regime between Georgia and China, which allowed Georgian citizens to travel visa-free to both mainland China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The existence of a visa-free regime contributes to the development of Georgia-China friendship and partnership, as well as the deepening of trade and economic cooperation and the strengthening of people-to-people ties.
According to data for 2024, bilateral trade turnover amounted to 1.9 billion US dollars. According to data for the first quarter of 2025, bilateral trade turnover amounted to 472 million US dollars. Last year, 88,583 Chinese tourists visited Georgia (an increase of 83% compared to 2023)," reads the report.
