“We deeply regret the unfair assessments and statements often made about Georgia by the European bureaucracy,” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in response to a journalist’s question during a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
According to the head of government, beyond unfair statements, there are often incorrect practices, including in funding.
“We have repeatedly seen practices of funding extremism by institutions directly linked to the European bureaucracy. We have witnessed direct precedents of interference in electoral processes before parliamentary elections, and in general, we see that Georgia’s state sovereignty is often not adequately respected, which is very regrettable for us. For us, the EU has been a symbol of justice for years, and we want it to remain a symbol of justice in the future. However, the European bureaucracy, unfortunately, sometimes does everything to undermine this attitude and change our perception. We will stubbornly continue moving toward the EU, and at the same time, we express hope that by the time Georgia is ready to join the EU, this attitude will change. The Prime Minister also expressed optimism that developments in Europe will shift in a positive direction, and we, too, want to share this optimism. For us, this change in attitude is, of course, very important because we have a clear foreign policy goal – EU membership. We want to join a just EU, where bureaucrats and politicians fairly assess events in various countries, including Georgia. This is fundamentally important for us, and in this context, I will take the opportunity once again to thank the Prime Minister and the Hungarian authorities for their fair approach. If we hear fair assessments and see a fair attitude from anyone, it is from the Hungarian authorities. This fairness is exemplified by Hungary’s steadfast and strong support for Georgia’s European integration. Once again, thank you to our Hungarian friends for this,” the Prime Minister stated.
