Shalva Papuashvili: I call on the British Embassy to disclose whom and with what amount it funded in connection with the 2024 parliamentary elections, and whom and with what amount it is funding today

"I call on the British Embassy to disclose whom and with what amount it funded in connection with the 2024 parliamentary elections, and whom and with what amount it is funding today," – wrote the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, on social media.

The Speaker also addressed all individuals who might have any information regarding the British Embassy’s funding.

"Following the statement made by the British Embassy, it was revealed that the embassy intended to fund partisan propaganda and extremist politicians whose declared goal was to disrupt local elections. This reinforces the suspicion that this was not the first attempt to fund propaganda and extremism.

I call on the British Embassy to disclose whom and with what amount it funded in relation to the 2024 parliamentary elections, and whom and with what amount it is currently funding.

I also appeal to anyone who may have any information regarding the British Embassy’s funding to provide me with that information," Papuashvili wrote.

For reference, the British Embassy in Georgia recently stated that it had to cancel planned grant proposals aimed at supporting the transparency and competitiveness of municipal elections. According to the diplomatic mission, following discussions with the Georgian government, they were informed that the government’s resolution “on the procedure for approving grants” is not yet finalized. As a result, there are currently no mechanisms or timelines in place for making decisions regarding grant approvals.
