"We will not back down under any circumstances because of this; on the contrary, we will fight even more unitedly," said Giorgi Vashadze, leader of "Strategy Aghmashenebeli," in response to the detention of "Lelo – Strong Georgia" leaders Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze.
According to Giorgi Vashadze, Bidzina Ivanishvili fears open political opposition and therefore imprisons his opponents.
"This is an attempt by the regime to demonstrate force, nothing more. We will not back down under any circumstances because of this; on the contrary, we will fight even more unitedly. The fact is that strength lies in unity, and 'Georgian Dream' fears our unity. Ivanishvili and Kobakhidze are afraid of open political opposition, imprisoning political opponents only when they feel threatened. This cannot be considered strength; in reality, it is weakness. When you detain so many people and find yourself in such a situation, this is, of course, a serious problem for them," Vashadze stated.
Vashadze noted that he has not yet decided whether he will attend the court hearing tomorrow.
For context, the leaders of "Lelo – Strong Georgia," Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze, were found guilty by the court for failing to comply with the demands of a parliamentary temporary investigative commission. By the decision of Judge Zviad Sharadze, they were each sentenced to 8 months in prison and banned from holding public office for 2 years.
Earlier today, a verdict was also announced in the case of Zurab Girchi Japaridze, one of the leaders of the "Coalition for Change." He was sentenced to 7 months in prison for failing to comply with the demands of the investigative commission and was also banned from holding public office for 2 years.
