German Ambassador visits hunger strikers in front of Parliament

German Ambassador Peter Fischer has visited five people who are on hunger strike near the Georgian Parliament.

The diplomat spoke to the hunger strikers, including politicians Elene Khoshtaria and Gedevan Popkhadze.

According to Gedevan Popkhadze, the diplomat expressed his solidarity with them.

"They expressed their solidarity, which we are grateful for, because the fact that the diplomatic corps is paying such attention means a lot to us, because all this is precisely because of the fight for Europe, so their solidarity is very valuable to us. There were questions, and we explained that the continuous protests have already been going on and people have been protesting what is happening in Georgia for a long time, and this form of protest, which was added today, is due to the reality that has been created in the country. The regime is becoming more and more aggressive, is increasingly leaving the legal and political space, and the Georgian people are losing hope for the future. We told the ambassador all this. Regarding me, he asked if my former colleagues were interested in my situation. Unfortunately, no, but it is good that European diplomats understand that in such a situation, a former colleague should be interested in your situation," Gedevan Popkhadze said in an interview with TV Pirveli.

Politicians Elene Khoshtaria and Gedevan Popkhadze began a hunger strike in front of the Georgian Parliament as a sign of protest. They express solidarity with the detained opposition politicians in this way. Today, civic activists Vasil Eliava, Giorgi Stepanova and Bacho Kutsia joined Khoshtaria and Popkhadze's hunger strike.
