The Council of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Party has adopted a resolution on Georgia entitled “Democracy under siege: a call to defend Georgia’s European path”.

The resolution underlines the unwavering commitment of the Georgian people to a pro-European and democratic future.

It also states that the Georgian Dream party bears full responsibility for the democratic setbacks, including the adoption of anti-democratic legislation and the rigged 2024 elections, human rights violations and the deviation of Georgia from its Euro-Atlantic path by suspending its integration into the European Union.

The resolution condemns: the politically motivated verdicts against Zurab Girchi Japaridze, Giorgi Vashadze, Badri Japaridze, Mamuka Khazaradze, Nika Melia and Givi Targamadze. The arrest of opposition politicians Nika Gvaramia and Irakli Okruashvili; human rights violations, repression of peaceful demonstrators and prosecution of over 60 activists; disinformation campaigns and hostile rhetoric against EU institutions and representatives; the adoption of anti-democratic laws, such as the law on foreign agents, which targets civil society, free press and fundamental freedoms, and the law on successor parties, which targets parties other than Georgian Dream and de facto prohibits them from participating in elections.

The resolution demands: the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, including political leaders, journalists and peaceful protesters;

holding new, free and fair parliamentary elections by the end of 2025, supervised by an impartial election administration. Repeal of anti-democratic legislation; sanctions, visa restrictions and financial measures at the EU and national levels against Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgian Dream officials, propagandists, police and prosecutors, corrupt judges and their families;

The resolution says that ALDE member parties and EU liberal partners should not cooperate with Georgian Dream representatives.
