Guram Macharashvili, an MP from People’s Power, stated to journalists: “If anyone is creating European nihilism in Georgia and insulting European values, unfortunately, it is precisely the European Parliament’s resolution and the EU bureaucracy with its decisions.”
According to him, when the resolution text demands new elections in Georgia and the release of the country’s third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, it means such a resolution has lost all value.
“This is yet another resolution — and they themselves know that no one pays attention to it anymore, neither in Georgia nor abroad. It is their only remaining weapon. They completely ignore the fact that after the 2024 elections, the only assessment came from OSCE/ODIHR, which concluded that the elections were competitive. Not to mention that there’s no evidence whatsoever of election fraud. And yet, they still include calls for new elections and Saakashvili’s release in the resolution — despite the fact that, in addition to the Strasbourg Court, the temporary investigative commission, during its five-month review, once again clearly showed the criminal nature of his nine-year rule to Georgian society. This makes such resolutions entirely worthless.”
He added:
"Therefore, our agenda — and that of the Georgian state — is to stay on a pragmatic course: peace, economic development, and the strengthening of international partnerships, including recalibrating relations with the United States, which we hope for. That is our agenda today.”
For context: Yesterday, July 8, the European Parliament held a debate on the situation in Georgia. A draft resolution was published on the European Parliament’s website and is scheduled for a vote today.
