“We are neither suited for a campaign to participate in the elections nor for a boycott campaign. We are divided on both sides, and enormous financial and human resources are being spent, which should be directed toward protests but are instead being wasted on a boycott campaign whose meaning I find hard to grasp,” said Georgia’s fifth President, Salome Zurabishvili.

According to Salome Zurabishvili, the only way out of the current situation is unity, and everything that serves to create division is the last lever in the hands of “Georgian Dream.”

Zurabishvili stated that if anyone in the country believes local elections can be held, it is a great myth, and the topic of elections has been introduced by “Georgian Dream” to divide and split the opposition, pitting supporters against opponents. The fifth president believes that this goal has already been achieved and notes, “We are in an absurd theater, and everyone is playing their role.”

Furthermore, Zurabishvili is convinced that local elections will not take place and adds, “We will not reach the end, and the people will not let this myth of elections come to pass.”

Additionally, Salome Zurabishvili calls the boycott campaign absurd and states that it can be manipulated even more easily because, “under conditions of fear, money, and threats,” people can be brought to the elections. In dictatorial regimes, boycott campaigns typically end this way.

“Criminal, mafia-like rules of deals and intimidation prevail in our country. No citizen is protected anymore. If anyone in this country believes that local elections can be held, it is a great myth. Elections do not exist; there is only the topic of elections, which has been introduced by ‘Georgian Dream’ to divide the opposition, split the opposition, and pit the two sides—supporters and opponents—against each other. The goal has been achieved. We are in an absurd theater, and everyone is playing their role to the point where there is insults, cursing, bullying, and so on between the two sides.

I am certain that these elections will not take place, we will not reach the end, and the people will not let this myth of elections come to pass. Meanwhile, the opposition has been split, and the protests have been weakened. Our only strength is unity. The side advocating for participation in the elections will end in failure. There is no formula for victory under these conditions. The parties that support participation do not claim their ambition is to defeat the regime or even weaken it. I don’t know what their goal is—if it is their party consolidation, that won’t happen either. Such discredit has already occurred that there will be no consolidation in the future. They will achieve nothing, no real results.

On the other hand, a boycott as a campaign is also absurd. There is no example of a boycott being declared as some kind of victory. In today’s conditions, just as elections would be rigged if someone participates, a boycott can be rigged even more easily. Under conditions of fear, money, and threats, people can be brought to the elections, even if they are opponents. In dictatorial regimes, boycott campaigns generally end this way,” said Salome Zurabishvili.
