What is happening is outrageous, how they beat a person who is serving a sentence in his cell and then how they take him to the clinic whenever they want, without warning, without any explanation or publicity about it, - the fifth President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, stated about the attack on the former head of the Co-Investment Fund, Giorgi Bachiashvili, in prison.
As Zurabishvili noted, Giorgi Bachiashvili's situation today is alarming.
“The country is already in complete chaos, in every respect. We see what is happening in the courts and what kind of courts there are in Georgia today, which are no longer subject to any standards except that they completely carry out all the instructions of the authorities. Today, we have also learned about the conditions created in prison for people who are victims of this regime. Giorgi Bachiashvili’s situation today is alarming. It is unacceptable that the elementary forms that are considered in any country minimum democratic standards are not observed in prison.
What is happening is outrageous, how they beat a person who is serving a sentence in his cell and then how they take him to the clinic whenever they want, without warning, without any explanation or publicity about it. This is a violation of all human rights. I do not know where the Public Defender is, how he has reacted to all this. This institution is no longer fulfilling its duty to the fullest. Insecurity is what reigns in this country today.
I would like to remind everyone of the fact that it was precisely because of these brutal actions and unjust treatment in prisons that the previous regime ended. Therefore, everyone should know that responsibility for all this will ultimately lie with those who not only give orders, but also with those who unquestioningly carry them out and are ready to participate in brutal behavior. This is not Georgia, this is not Georgian traditions, this is not the law that we have been building and following for centuries. This is another regime, another country, we will not tolerate this for a single minute. It is time for society to see what is happening. It is time not to look elsewhere, because this is what concerns everyone today and tomorrow,” said Salome Zurabishvili.
