Our citizens are falling victim to indifference and irresponsibility, while ensuring their safety is the government's foremost responsibility – a government that is focused solely on persecuting political opponents and clinging to its power.

Georgia’s fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili, wrote this on social media in response to the building collapse on Station Square in Tbilisi, which resulted in the deaths of two people and the injury of one.

As Zurabishvili writes, this tragedy is part of a systemic problem in the capital, where dangerous buildings exist in almost every historic district.

According to her, citizens are paying the price for the government’s indifference and irresponsibility.

“It’s hard to comfort people who have lost a family member, loved one, or friend in today’s tragedy. I offer my condolences and stand with them in this extremely difficult moment.

But this tragic incident is not only a personal tragedy – it is part of a systemic problem in our capital called hazardous buildings, for which full responsibility lies with the Tbilisi City Hall.

Today, this problem exists in almost every historic district of Tbilisi. Our citizens live in dangerous buildings, their lives and health at risk, yet those who should be working on these issues day and night are showing complete ignorance.

We see no preventive measures, and even more so, no systemic approach or plan. And if such a plan exists, it only exists on paper and does not serve to solve people’s problems.

Our citizens are falling victim to indifference and irresponsibility, while ensuring their safety is the government's foremost duty – a government that is focused solely on persecuting political opponents and preserving its own power,” writes Salome Zurabishvili.

For reference: a few hours ago, a section of the facade of a residential building near Station Square in Tbilisi collapsed. Two bodies have been recovered during rescue operations.
