“Today, the radical opposition is at a dead end. They essentially have two paths, and one is worse than the other: they participate in the elections and lose, or they don’t participate and lose,” said Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament, commenting on the memorandum of cooperation signed between the “Gakharia for Georgia” and “Lelo – Strong Georgia” parties regarding local elections.

According to Papuashvili, these parties believe that one of their bets might pay off, but “ultimately, their result will be zero.”

“In one case, they will lose in the elections; in the other, they will lose politically as a result of the elections. For them, political defeat lies in both paths. Therefore, this is a political dilemma for them, and most importantly, it’s a dilemma for their sponsors, who are unable to decide. We see that this is not the result of analysis but rather acting in the style of a gambling game by their foreign patrons. They want to bet on both red and black. Four parties that passed the threshold have split: two are participating in the elections, two are not, thinking that perhaps one of their bets will pay off. The thing is, their chances in all of this are zero. So, ultimately, their result will be zero,” Papuashvili stated.

Regarding the question of who might be the mayoral candidate for “Lelo” and “Gakharia for Georgia” in the October elections, Shalva Papuashvili stated that Mamuka Khazaradze is a “fraudster” and Giorgi Gakharia is a “liar.”

“Who could their candidate be for us to take seriously at all?! It’s impossible for anything serious to come from them or their initiatives. Let me remind you who we’re dealing with—Mamuka Khazaradze, who has been recognized by a court verdict as a fraudster, protested that verdict, went to international arbitration, demanded one and a half billion from the pockets of all our citizens, and the international arbitration also told him he was a fraudster. They ordered him to pay 600,000 dollars to the budget, and he paid it. On the other side is Giorgi Gakharia, a situational liar, as we have seen multiple times during the investigative commission. To dodge an inconvenient question at a particular moment, he would say one thing one minute and contradict himself the next,” Papuashvili stated.

For reference, the “Gakharia for Georgia” and “Lelo – Strong Georgia” parties have agreed to cooperate regarding the local government elections. The memorandum of cooperation was signed today by Berdia Sichinava, Executive Secretary of “Gakharia for Georgia,” and Irakli Kupradze, General Secretary of “Lelo – Strong Georgia.” As Berdia Sichinava noted, the parties “agree on a joint fight and common principles in the local government elections.”
