We have seen the consequences of the lack of transparency of foreign funding in Georgia, which aimed to instill foreign interests in political parties and NGOs and incite unrest - it is paradoxical that such traditional values as sovereignty, independence and democracy are the greatest innovation today, - this statement was made by the Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili during his speech at a panel discussion within the framework of the World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments (IPU) in Geneva.
As Papuashvili noted, the Georgian government remains committed to the restoration of Georgia's territorial integrity only through peaceful means and is focused on the reconciliation and engagement of war-torn societies.
According to him, peace initiatives gradually create a basis for trust, which is the first important component of peace.
“Georgia, located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, belongs to a region known for tension and instability and faces constant challenges in achieving peace. Despite the experience of war and occupation, we have chosen the path of peace, reform, democratic development and innovation.
We believe that strong democratic institutions are an important safeguard against instability and we have taken many steps to move forward in this direction.
Unfortunately, the threats to peace today include not only wars and conflicts, but also serious challenges stemming from disrespect for the sovereignty of nations and interference in their internal affairs.
In Georgia, we have seen the consequences of the lack of transparency of foreign funding, which aims to instill foreign interests into political parties and NGOs, incite unrest and to promote violent demonstrations to overthrow democratically elected governments.
Only democratic peace is durable. It must be based on transparency, accountability and justice. Peace is based not only on the absence of military conflicts, but also on respect for the sovereignty of nations, their national interests, culture and traditions.
Paradoxically, such traditional values as sovereignty, independence and democracy are the greatest innovation today.
I once again confirm my readiness to cooperate with each of you on all initiatives aimed at creating a future where peace, sovereignty and democracy are a common and valued reality,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
