Salome Zurabishvili on Nino Datashvili: A new step toward returning to the Soviet Union — the psychiatric institution has become a new tool of terror

"The psychiatric institution has become a new tool of terror," – Georgia’s fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili, wrote on X.

“A new step toward returning to the Soviet Union. The psychiatric institution is now a new instrument of terror: Nino Datashvili — an activist, teacher, and single mother — was arrested on June 20. Today, the ‘court’ ordered her transfer to a psychiatric facility!” – writes Salome Zurabishvili.

For context, according to the organization Partnership for Human Rights, the Prosecutor’s Office requested a psychiatric examination for the detained activist Nino Datashvili, and the court approved this motion.

As for Nino Datashvili herself, she was arrested on June 20 in connection with an incident that occurred on June 9 at the Tbilisi City Court. She is charged under Article 353^2, Part 3 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which involves assaulting a public official while performing their official duties. The charge is punishable by a fine or imprisonment for a term of 4 to 7 years.
