Irakli Kobakhidze - If someone hopes that the MEGOBARI Act can have any effect, they are very mistaken

Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze has stated that those who believe the MEGOBARI Act could have any impact are “very mistaken.”

According to Kobakhidze, if false information is included in documents such as the European Parliament resolution or the MEGOBARI Act, it holds no significance for Georgian society.

“In reality, quite a few lifelines were thrown to the opposition, however, none of them helped, given that the public sees everything. The main thing is the public's assessment of everything. If false information is reflected in any act, for example, in the European Parliament resolution or the MEGOBARI Act, this will naturally have no value for Georgian society. All the lies that were spread against the Georgian people by specific institutions have been completely dispelled. If anyone hopes that the MEGOBARI Act can have any effect, they are very mistaken. Georgian society evaluates not the documents approved from the outside, but the extent to which these documents reflect the truth," Kobakhidze said.

The Prime Minister also responded to recent rhetoric from the opposition, saying threats of a "peaceful overthrow" of the government have been heard since 2016 but have had no real effect due to the strength of state institutions.

“We have been hearing such threats continuously since 2016, although we see that the state, state institutions are strong, including our law enforcement agencies. Now the threat has no power at all. There is no outline of the potential for the execution of these threats. Accordingly, they can voice any threat, although these people themselves are not serious, and accordingly, their threat is also quite serious for Georgian society,” Kobakhidze said.

Commenting on the upcoming local elections, Kobakhidze expressed confidence in the ruling party’s chances and emphasized that Kakha Kaladze would win in Tbilisi in the first round.

“Our goal is simple – we must win the mayoral and city council elections in 64 municipalities, and we will definitely achieve this. As for the opposition, perhaps their real goal is to create factions in city councils. In fact, we intend to win the mayoral and city council elections in all 64 municipalities. As for Tbilisi specifically, I am sure that Kakha Kaladze will win these elections in Tbilisi in the first round. The rest is the business of the opposition,” Kobakhidze said.

Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed the June 20 case, noting that the Strasbourg Court has ordered Georgia to resume the investigation.

"The Strasbourg Court has ordered us to resume the investigation into the June 20 case. There are too many question marks - why did it come to the use of rubber bullets, this main question must be answered. Let's wait for the results of the investigation, from a political perspective we have made assessments and everything is as clear as it is today, however, it is important that a legal assessment is made and the investigation will determine this," the Prime Minister said.
