The guarantor of the August 12 agreement was the European Union, however, nothing was done to implement the agreement. On the contrary, sanctions were imposed on us, not on Russia. We were banned from buying weapons, and they began construction of the Nord Stream pipeline with Russia, - the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, stated in Shindisi.
As Shalva Papuashvili noted, we Georgians know best how such wars begin and end.
“17 years ago, on August 12, a ceasefire agreement was signed, a 6-point plan, which was signed at the mediation of the European Union, and this plan has not been implemented to this day, including one of the points that Russia should withdraw its troops to their starting positions. The guarantor of this agreement on August 12 was the European Union, however, despite the fact that Russia did not fulfill anything, the European Union did not impose sanctions on Russia, nor did Russia pay any political price. After that, there was the construction of pipelines with Russia and strategic projects between Germany and Russia. After that, there was trade between Europe and Russia. So, our war ended, we signed a one-page agreement. An embargo was imposed on Georgia, neither Europe nor the US gave us weapons. How they stand by Ukraine today and how they stood by us? They banned us from buying weapons, after 2008, the Europeans imposed sanctions not on Russia, but on Georgia. This is also a lesson, which is why the Georgian people showed wisdom in 2022 and did not drag themselves into a war that we have seen many times," said Shalva Papuashvili.
