According to information from non-governmental organizations, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has registered a lawsuit regarding the “Foreign Agents Registration Act"

According to the non-governmental organization “Transparency International – Georgia,” the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has registered a lawsuit filed by several Georgian non-governmental organizations regarding the “Foreign Agents Registration Act” adopted by the Georgian Parliament.

According to the organization, the complaint addresses both the “repressive legislation and specific actions initiated based on these laws.”

As per the disseminated information, the non-governmental sector is contesting that “the government’s goal is not to enforce the laws but to suppress dissenting opinions” and halt their activities.

“The Strasbourg Court has registered a complaint against the repressive laws adopted recently by ‘Georgian Dream’ to restrict Georgian civil society organizations and the media, including Ivanishvili’s ‘Fara.’

The complaint concerns both the repressive legislation and specific actions initiated based on these laws. Specifically, it addresses the investigations launched by the Anti-Corruption Bureau against some of the plaintiffs. We argue that the government’s goal is not to enforce laws but to suppress dissenting opinions and stop our activities, making it impossible for us to continue helping people. These laws fundamentally violate the freedoms of association and expression, the right to privacy, the right to a fair trial, and other rights.

The complaint to the Strasbourg Court was jointly filed by ‘Transparency International – Georgia,’ the ‘Economic Policy Research Center,’ the ‘Rule of Law Center,’ ‘Publica,’ ‘European Orbit of Georgia,’ and the ‘Civil Movement for Freedom,’” the statement reads.
