Valeri Chechelashvili: Talking about starting relations with the US "on a new page" is a manifestation of ingratitude - I think the US's patience is running out

According to diplomat Valeri Chechelashvili's assessment, the detention of Levan Khabeishvili, chairman of the political council of the "United National Movement," and other politicians shows that "Georgian Dream" does not feel secure and has certain fears.

As Chechelashvili stated on the "Palitranews" program "Daily Newsroom," the detention of politicians deepens the political crisis both within the country and abroad.

"Today, it seems that whatever forecast Levan Khabeishvili made, everything has come true. This provides grounds for the conclusion that Levan Khabeishvili has very serious sources of information, from within 'Georgian Dream' itself. Whether this was the basis for the detention or not is a secondary issue. I won't delve into legal analysis; politically, this means that 'Georgian Dream' does not feel very secure and is driven by certain fears. Second, through these detentions in the opposition spectrum, it deepens the political crisis within the country and complicates our relations with former strategic partners like the US and the EU. Unfortunately, our relations have never been at such a low point with either Brussels or Washington," Chechelashvili stated.

Additionally, he spoke about the detention of former Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze and did not rule out that there are internal oppositions within the "Georgian Dream" team.

"In reality, it's hard to draw conclusions about what's happening in 'Georgian Dream,' but the Defense Minister is a very serious figure. His detention means that there are indeed oppositions within 'Georgian Dream.' Given that Juansher Burchuladze is a person very close to the former Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, this probably relates to the figure of the former Prime Minister. I think this process won't end here. The question is whether this will happen before October 4, which is somewhat of a sacred date, or after October 4, since 'Georgian Dream' probably thinks that if this process continues, it will seriously undermine the political situation and weaken their pre-election positions. Whether this decision is motivated by that," Chechelashvili stated.

Additionally, Valeri Chechelashvili spoke about the local elections and negatively assessed the participation of part of the opposition. According to him, the unity of the opposition is the most important factor for starting positive changes in the country. In Valeri Chechelashvili's opinion, the opposition should have declared a boycott collectively.

"The reality we have today is the worst for the opposition and, accordingly, for Georgia's future. Unfortunately, this has confirmed the fragmentation of our opposition and their confrontations with each other. Of course, this increases 'Georgian Dream's' chances from every perspective. We have a paradoxical situation - the opposition, through its own actions, is helping to strengthen 'Georgian Dream'; 'Georgian Dream,' through internal confrontations in the team, these arrests, and oppositions, is supporting the opposition, while the whole country is sinking deeper into a political crisis. This is the unfortunate reality today," Chechelashvili stated.

Additionally, he spoke about US-Georgia relations and explained that he does not agree with the idea of starting relations with the US "on a new page." According to Valeri Chechelashvili, such statements are "a manifestation of ingratitude," since it implies that we do not appreciate the assistance that America has provided to Georgia in various fields, whether military, investments in the economy, humanitarian aid, or otherwise.

"I think the US's patience is running out. If 'Georgian Dream' continues like this, unfortunately, the 'MEGOBARI Act' will be passed. The Helsinki Commission's hearing once again clearly confirmed the bipartisan support for this act.

'Georgian Dream' must take concrete steps that confirm the government is ready for certain compromises, both on the political field and abroad, in our relations. 'Georgian Dream' does not have the political will for this; it has not demonstrated or expressed readiness to go for compromises. No statements that we want to start new relations will fix these relations. Moreover, we are missing out on very important opportunities. Neither Georgian society nor Georgia's history will forgive 'Georgian Dream' for this," Chechelashvili stated.
